Last week I had a crappy few days! I was caught up in self doubt from some bad decisions I had made, and felt about the same way I feel when I crash on my mountain bike: stinging, scabbed, bloody, and sore.
Self doubt breeds self doubt.
I was caught in this for a few days last week, and it was effecting all of my relationships and my ability to be the leader that I knew I needed to be. While in a plane this past weekend, I was reading in the Bible. It was in Luke chapter 4, verse 8: “And Jesus answered and said unto him, GET BEHIND ME SATAN.”
GET BEHIND ME.
The words were powerful and while I don’t claim to be a Bible scholar in any way, I instantly related them to me.
“What do I need to ‘Get Behind Me’?” I asked myself. I proceeded to make a long list. The reality is that we all have a crappy few days. We are then faced with a moment of decision.
We either fall into being a victim, or we forge forward as a leader and live the life we know we are called to lead.
Here are some of the things I believe we all need to “GET BEHIND US”:
-Our mistakes
-Our weak, incorrect perceptions of life
-Our incorrect judgements about who we are
-Our poor health
-Judgements about other people
-Our addictions
-Lies we tell ourselves
-Bad friends who don’t bring out the very best in us
-Lack of forgiveness
-Our small thinking
-Our poor confidence
-Our mismanagement of money
-Our laziness
-Our anger
-Our doubt
-Our cynicism towards life
-Our overly busy lifestyles
-Endless hours of TV viewing that numbs our brain
-Our selfishness
This is just a short list. Many of these I personally have put behind me or need to constantly be aware that I must put them behind me.
Since true change is found in ACTION, I encourage you to take a moment to write your own list of what you need to Get Behind You.
On a piece of paper write: “What I Need To Get Behind Me.”
Just the act of writing these things down and admitting them will be freeing in itself. Over the next several weeks, stay tuned to the blog here, and we’ll be doing some more exercises that take direct action to conquer many of these things we need to Get Behind Us.
